Virginia Home SchoolsParents who wish to teach their children at home have that privilege in Virginia, but they will need to be sure that they are providing education that at least meets the standards of public schools. To verify the academic progress of students who are taught at home the Virginia Home School laws have several checks in place. Virginia home schools are governed by state laws. Parents can home school their children, but they have a responsibility to the local school district that their children would otherwise attend. Parents will generally have to verify the education that they are providing for their children to their local schools. This may mean that they have to pass a local test, or it may mean that the parent in charge of the education simply has to complete a verification questionnaire. If the child is eventually enrolled in the public schools, or if parents are requesting a public school diploma for their children, home schooled children are required to pass a battery of tests in core subjects or to successfully pass a state mandated test. The Virginia home schools require a yearly assessment of progress for each child home schooled. Parents are also required to possess a high school diploma or to show that they have the willingness and ability to teach. The choice of curriculum being studied by the children is reported in most states. Virginia home schools require that curriculum the children are being taught be on record. Some home school regulations in other states are not quite as strict as they are in Virginia. In this state, regulations are in place to ensure that home schooled children are receiving the best education possible. |
