High School Boarding SchoolsIn the search for education alternatives, some students and parents find themselves turning to institutions which may have been more popular in years past boarding schools. For many years, several myths, such as they are for students with behavior problems, only students from certain racial/ethnic groups attend or students have to be wealthy to attend, have surrounded boarding schools. Todays boarding schools are filled with students from a variety of racial/ethnic backgrounds, varied socio-economic situations and the schools curriculums are targeted to meet many different needs. Many families and students chose to be educated in a boarding school because most boarding schools have smaller class sizes and stress student participation. Boarding schools frequently have challenging academics and highly educated faculties which are attractive to many families, especially those with students interested in pursuing a college degree after high school. Boarding schools with this type of focus are often referred to as college-preparatory boarding schools. Another type of boarding school may offer therapeutic programming to help students who are struggling in traditional school settings. This type of setting is commonly called a therapeutic boarding school and may involve curriculum and resources to help students who are dealing with emotional problems, behavioral issues, learning difficulties and/or substance abuse problems. Boarding schools which offer programs for students in eighth grade and lower are referred to as junior boarding schools. Some junior boarding schools are stand-alone, while others may be connected to programming for older students usually in college-preparatory boarding schools. Boarding schools may also specialize in the type of students they offer programs for. Some examples of this type of school include: all-boys schools, all-girls schools, military schools, arts schools and religious boarding schools. The choice to attend a boarding school is not an easy one to make. Before a student decides to pack up his or her things and move away to attend school, he or she and their family should carefully research all of the options available. A tour of the school and its facilities can be very helpful in making a decision. Remember each boarding school is unique and each will offer an experience that is different from another. It is worth taking the time to find a perfect for the student and their family. |
