School Teacher

Many high school students begin thinking about what career path they should take, and some of them will consider becoming a school teacher. There is certainly no profession more honorable than a teacher; however, the job is not for everyone. It takes a lot more than the desire to have the summer months off of work! Successful school teachers, who are also happy with their career choice, usually have some similar qualities.

Patience. No teacher can honestly enjoy their workday if they have a low level of patience. As a teacher, your job will be to transfer content and skill knowledge to a group of young people, many of whom get frustrated when learning something difficult. You will need to have the ability to remain calm and collected when facing a room full of kids who do not get the concept you are trying to teach them. Sometimes those kids are also tired, bored, hungry, mad, or otherwise unruly; you will definitely need patience on days such as these!

Love of learning. Teachers will be lifelong learners and will have to constantly be attending continuing education courses; and they will also be trying to get their students to develop a love of learning. If you find that you get excited learning a new concept, and feel a real sense of accomplishment once you have mastered a new skill, then the profession of school teacher may be perfect for you.

Love of young people. No matter what age you end up teaching, you will be spending your day with children or young adults. This age group is usually fun, often entertaining, but also sometimes irritating. Make sure that you have a desire to spend a large portion of your waking hours with kids before you make the decision to become a school teacher.
