School Supply List

During the beginning of every school year, most teachers spend several days in preparation for the task ahead. Rooms are decorated, lesson plans are created, classroom procedures are established, and school supply lists are copied. It is important to not simply copy the lists that you have created in the past, but to truly think about what kind of supplies you will need for the upcoming school year. This is especially important for elementary school teachers, who usually face the task of teaching several different subjects during the school day. The two important factors for a good school supply list is: 1) make it complete, and 2) make it cost efficient for students and their parents.

How do I make it complete?
There is something very frustrating about coming upon an important lesson and realizing that you have forgotten an important item on your supply list. You will then have to either purchase the items using your classroom budget, or send a note home with your students. To avoid forgetting something on your list, carefully read through your lesson plans for you the year ahead, making a note of what you will need for the activities. Even if you are not completely sure that you will need something, add it to the listif it is not too expensive! When you think you have a complete list, share it with other teachers in your grade level and find out what they think about it. Do they see something left off? Do they think that you have asked for something you wont really need?

How do I make it cost efficient?
Before you send home a school supply list, make sure it will not unreasonably burden your students families. An easy way to do this is to go to the stores yourself and price the items you have listed. When you get finished, you can include some suggestions of where to find the most reasonably-priced supplies, and perhaps even an estimate of how much the supplies will cost. Finally, make sure that the students know they can come to you if they have difficulties paying for the items on their school supply list.
