However, despite its increasing popularity as a career, cosmetology and cosmetology schools are not for everyone.

People, who are interested in succeeding as cosmetologists, quickly learn there are some key skills and abilities they need to learn and master while in training at cosmetology schools. One of the first and most important skills they learn is communication. Since the field of cosmetology involves helping people with their personal appearances, a cosmetologist must learn to listen to others and to ask questions to be sure the client gets what he/she wants. Also, being able to express oneself clearly is vital to a cosmetologist. Cosmetology schools also help their students learn to problem solve.

Cosmetology schools teach students to concentrate while completing a task and to prioritize responsibilities. Students are encourages to look at problems from a variety of angles and to find ways of solving conflict that benefits all sides. Cosmetology schools help future hairdressers, makeup artists and manicurists learn to organize themselves, their time and their tools. Students are taught how to manage their time so they know how long a task will take. This helps them be on time for appointments with clients.

Learning to organize the tools of the trade helps cosmetologists be sure they are on time and prepared for the situations they may face. Organization also helps if the student goes on to own his/her own business. The skills he/she learned in cosmetology school will help him/her run an efficient, profit earning salon or shop while maintaining a loyal and satisfied customer base.
