Design Schools

Design schools, also referred to as art schools, are educational intuitions which offer intense specifically focused educational experiences in the arts. Most commonly, design schools focus on the visual arts such as painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, graphic design and graphic illustration. Below is a description of some of the fields of study commonly found in design schools across the country.

Advertising Design: This type of study involves learning about the role of visual arts in advertising and marketing. Curriculum in these classes often involves teaching students about creating visual images to promote a product by appealing to a target audience. Classes may involve learning illustration, drawing, and painting and computer graphics.

Animation: Design schools which offer classes in animation are usually teaching students skills they will use in conjunction with computer programs and/or filmmaking.

CAD/Drafting: CAD/Drafting coursework involves components of architectural design. This course of study teaches students to use computer software and blueprint design and interpretation to plan out buildings and structures.

Fashion Design: Curriculum involving fashion design helps students study clothing trends and concepts. It teaches them how to develop apparel using a variety of colors, fabrics and materials. Many times this curriculum also involves learning about other aspects of the fashion industry such as retail and/or merchandising. Depending of the school, the basics of importing and exporting may be discussed as well.

Game Design: Due to the increasing popularity of gaming systems, many design schools are offering courses of study devoted to teaching students the nuances of developing computer and on-line games. The classes in this area are generally centered on computer programming, computer animation, and software development.

Interior Design: Curriculum involving interior design helps students study housing and business interior designs and concepts. It teaches them how to develop interiors using a variety of colors, fabrics and materials. Many times this curriculum also involves learning about other aspects of the industry such as real estate, retail and/or merchandising. Depending of the school, the basics of importing and exporting may be discussed as well. Some schools even touch on the history of furniture and houses and their role in human history.
