Spanish Lessons

It is a benefit to all students of the Spanish language to learn about the Latino culture. There are many facets to the Latino culture, but your Spanish lesson plans will be greatly enhanced if you include some lessons on the food, art, traditions and holidays embedded in the Spanish culture.

Introducing your students to the foods of various Spanish regions is a great addition to your Spanish lesson plans. Older students can fry up sopapillas, little fried puffs of dough served with cinnamon and sugar. Younger students would enjoy making Mexican hot chocolate with traditional Mexican chocolate, or Spanish rice. Your students can even plan a fiesta event to have their friends, parents or another class sample some of their favorite Spanish cuisines. They can create little labels with the Spanish names of each dish.

There are some traditional Spanish or Latino holidays that integrate very easily into your Spanish lesson plans. In early November you can introduce Dia De Los Muertos, the Day of the Dead. In the winter there is Las Posadas and El Ano Nuevo. These holidays and celebrations can be studied and compared to similar events in American culture. Students can learn the basic background of each holiday and maybe one or two activities that correlate with them.

There have been many famous Spanish artists who have contributed greatly to the art world. It is excellent background knowledge if your Spanish lessons include some information on these artists and their famous works. Diego Velazquez is a well-known Spanish artist from the early 1600s, most famous for his masterpiece Las Meninas. More contemporary Spanish artists include Juan Gris, Juan Miro, and Salvador Dali. Perhaps one of the most famous Spanish artists is Pablo Picasso. Whether you focus on food, holidays, art or all three, your students will greatly benefit by including some of these topics in your Spanish lesson plans.
