Adult LearningThere are many situations in which adults may find themselves needing or wanting to return to the classroom. Do you want to learn Spanish, get your GED or take a computer class? Maybe youd like to get certified in first aid, take swimming lessons or learn how to read better. Adult learning options are extensive and there are a variety of resources to turn to depending upon the situation you are looking for. A perfect place to start is with your local community college. Most community colleges have adult learning centers, and offer a variety of programs. Some will offer adult basic education classes, such as learning how to read, math help, English as a Second Language and General Equivalency Diploma (GED) preparation programs. Many of these services are offered free of charge or on a sliding fee scale. If you are looking to further your education, but are unsure where to begin, the academic advisors are happy to sit down with you to look at your options and interests. There are also usually at least one or two non-profit organizations in most communities that specialize in adult learning options. Look in the yellow pages under adult learning to find them. If you are simply looking for some fun classes to expand your skills or learn something new, see if your community offers Community Education classes. These might be offered through your local community college, university, or parks and recreation department. Many senior centers and community organizations also offer a variety of interesting adult learning options, usually open to the public. These classes can cover every topic imaginable, from cooking, exercise, computers, second language and photography. They are usually of much shorter duration than a regular college course. There are often fees involved, but these are typically affordable for most, and scholarships may be available. It is never too late to learn something new and add a little spice to your life! |
