Art Lessons

The concept of line is one of the basic elements of design that compose any piece of art. When first introducing this concept to children, it is ideal to do a quick progression of art lessons, so they get a solid idea of the concept. Begin teaching about straight lines. Use blank paper, no bigger than 5 x 7. They can draw anywhere on the paper, but they can only use long straight lines. The lines are allowed to cross each other, but they need to go completely from one side of the paper to the other, side to side.

After each lesson, it is important for the children to have time to admire and observe each others work. Next, continue using straight lines, but they have to all go in the same direction. They can space them far apart or close together, or create a pattern. Use a new piece of paper for each lesson. Move on to wavy lines. The lines are still going in the same direction, but they are curvy. They size of the curves may vary, as well as the spacing.

Zig zagging lines come next. Again, follow the guidelines given earlier. These mini art lessons can be done on separate days, or a few on the same day. For the final product, tell the children they can use all of the types of lines they have learned: straight, wavy or zigzag. The lines cannot cross and they must all be in the same direction across the paper. They can space them how they like.

When they are finished with their lines, they can use crayon or colored pencil to color between the lines. When they are done coloring, they can go over their original lines with a black marker, to make them stand out. The resulting pieces will be unique and colorful. The students will have gained a basic understanding of the concept of line through these art lessons.
