QUESTION/PROBLEM: General Educational Development Tests (GED)

last updated October 22, 1997

Example queries:

How do I register to take the GED, and what can I expect that the GED will cover?

Is a computerized version of the GED available to GED test-takers?

Is there any data to indicate that successful completion of the GED is truly beneficial to GED test-takers in terms of income and/or further educational development?

COMMENTARY

The General Educational Development Tests (GED) are a high school equivalency degree program sponsored by the American Council on Education. Contact information for GED headquarters and services are:
     GED Testing Service
     American Council on Education
     1 Dupont Circle Suite 20
     Washington DC 20036
     telephone: 202-939-9490
     GED hotline (toll-free): 800-626-9433
     e-mail: ged#064;ace.nche.edu
Unfortunate news is that a computerized version of the GED is not yet available; however, according to a GED representative as of late summer 1997, the computer-adaptive version is in progress and will be available in (probably) another two or three years.

The crucial piece of information that any prospective GED test-taker needs to know is this: It is your state (or province) department of education that is the designated, official GED test administrator. Therefore, each state establishes its own standards for GED passing scores as well as policy regarding re-takes of the GED tests. GED testing schedules are established by individual testing centers. If you need contact information for your designated state GED authority in order to ascertain state GED policies and/or your local GED testing center, then use the following WWW resource:

State, Provincial, and Territorial GED Contacts
provided by the General Educational Development (GED) Testing Service

The most highly recommended resource by which to learn about the GED and to monitor developments in a computerized version of the GED is the official GED site.

The first document in this set is a final report titled
"Preparation for the Mathematics GED Test: A Computer Based Program,"
which describes a project to develop a General Educational
Development (GED) mathematics preparation program for the adult
learner at the 9-12 grade level. The other two documents are a
teacher's guide and a student workbook, which together with a
computer software package comprise the GED mathematics program for
adult learners at the 9-12 grade level. The teacher's guide includes
program purpose and instructions for the teacher, instructions for
the student, answer key for the student workbook problems, and
diagnostic examination with an answer key. The student workbook
contains explanation and examples as well as exercises for each of
the five units of the program. Each unit consists of one to five
chapters. Units are: (1) number relationships (whole numbers,
fractions, decimals and percent); (2) measurement (length and height
measurement, weight measurement, liquid measurement, metric system);
(3) data analysis; (4) algebra (arithmetic operations using integers,
algebraic equations, inequalities, equations in two variables); and

This handbook is intended to illustrate to students that they are
not alone in their fear of tests and to help students reduce their
own test anxiety. The handbook is a compilation of writings
contributed by students who attended an adult basic education (ABE)
program to prepare teenage and adult students to take the General
Educational Development (GED) test. The poems, articles, and
crossword puzzle included in the handbook reveal their authors'
personal feelings about tests and explain how learning about methods
to reduce test anxiety helped them to perform better in testing
situations. (MN)

in general and over the General Educational Development (GED) test in
particular. Exercises are provided to help students analyze and
understand their feelings about and while taking tests, recall the
childhood messages that they received that have led to their test
anxiety, analyze their strengths and weaknesses, learn about and
prepare for taking a test at their designated test site, practice and
learn general strategies for taking multiple-choice tests, develop
individual test-taking strategies, learn basic relaxation techniques,
and develop a plan to handle their test anxiety. (MN)

Outcomes of GED Graduation: An Annotated Bibliography of Research
Reports.
  Johnson, Mark; Valentine, Thomas

  125p.

  Language: English
  Document Type: BIBLIOGRAPHY (131)
This annotated bibliography includes a separate entry for each of
57 research reports written about the General Educational Development
(GED) tests. For inclusion, documents were required to meet three
criteria. They must: (1) focus on outcomes of GED graduation; (2)
present some form of empirical, research-based evidence concerning
the outcomes of GED graduation; and (3) constitute a primary research
report rather than a secondary commentary on someone else's report.
The documents are arranged in chronological order, from 1953 to 1992.
Each annotation provides this information: title; author(s); date;
publication information; overview; methodology; summary of findings;
and critique of study. A preface reaches the conclusion that of the
57 "flawed" tests of the GED, the GED passed at least 40 of them with
flying colors. Author and subject indexes are appended. These
subjects are indexed: affective outcomes, education outcomes,
economic outcomes, family-related outcomes, and military performance.

Teaching Basic Writing Skills to Adults: Introduction.
  Johnson, Dell
  [1990]
  11p.
  Document Type: BIBLIOGRAPHY (131)
This publication contains an annotated bibliography of 19 sources
of information for instructors of General Educational Development
Test (GED) preparation classes and adult basic education classes. An
introduction discusses the literature search that identified
materials and information to help GED instructors teach adult
education, generally, and writing instruction, specifically. It
describes the sources and the evaluation of those sources to locate
practical suggestions for activities on teaching writing skills or
easily understood insights or strategies for teaching adults. The
annotated bibliography gives examples of these types of sources:
articles, books, student study guides, and organizations. A brief
introduction to each type of source offers suggestions for locating
more resources. Annotations of print materials, which are in
alphabetical order by author, provide this information: author(s),
title, publisher and date of publication, pagination, and content
summary. Annotations of organizations, arranged alphabetically by
name of organization, provide this information: address, telephone
number, and description of services. An attachment is a
"pathfinder," a shorter version of the annotated bibliography
containing fewer annotations. (YLB)
