Online Psychology Degree
In the United States, the states have authority and regulation over colleges and universities which exist within their borders. Because, the regulations vary from state to state questions of program standards and quality came to light. (For example, a program may meet the regulations for state approval in Minnesota but it may not meet the standards set by Wisconsin.) Accreditation developed because the need for ensuring consistent quality in post-secondary education became evident. The accreditation process is a lengthy and thorough one. It is a voluntary process for colleges and universities to seek accreditation for their online psychology degree programs. The accreditation process involves private, non governmental regional or national agencies developing a set of standards and expectations. Universities and colleges are evaluated to determine if their programs meet the basic level of these standards of quality. Accreditation is an intensive, ongoing process. It involves on-site visits to colleges and universities. Accreditation also involves a review of a programs curriculum, teaching methods, faculty credentials and students performances. If a college or university does not continually maintain high expectations and standards, as described in the accreditation process, they can lose accreditation status. For online psychology degree programs, a potential student may want to see if the college or university is accredited by the Distance Education and Training Council. The Distance Education and Training Council is a national organization which determine if a college or universitys distance education programs meets a rigorous set of national expectations and standards. |
