Cooking SchoolMany people who enjoy working with food seek careers in the culinary arts. To get the education they need for a successful career, many chefs attend cooking school. Cooking school offers specialized training in food preparation and presentation. Employment in the culinary arts field is very competitive and it is important to do well in cooking school. If you are interested in pursuing a career in the culinary arts, you may want to begin to hone your skills before you even start cooking school. Below are some ideas of courses you take while in high school to help prepare you to make the most of the training you will receive while learning the culinary arts. Math Chefs and others, who work in preparing food, often need to know a great deal about measurements and fractions. They also need to be able to convert numbers to fractions and decimals when developing recipes. A strong background in chemistry will help you learn the skills of mixing ingredients and following directions. It will also increase your awareness of different chemicals which you may encounter in the field. Health classes offer information about a variety of situations which professionals encounter in the culinary industry. First aid and CPR are always great skills to have regardless of the profession you work in. Both of these teach you how to handle medical emergencies including how to treat cuts and burns which are common to those who work in kitchens. Health classes may also teach you the basics of how to and safely prepare food to avoid passing on any contagions. While you may think grammar and cooking are worlds apart once you begin working in the culinary arts, you will quickly learn how important it is to be able to clearly communicate with people. English skills will help you in both your written and verbal communications with your co-workers, employers and most importantly customers. So instead of spending your time in high school counting the days until you are done, use it to invest in your future and improve your skills and earning potential. |
